DESCRIPTION

 

This is skilled work in the operation of light weight vans and trucks.  An employee in this class is primarily responsible for the operation of trucks that are used in delivering supplies and other freight.  Work is performed in accordance with established schedules and specific instructions and is reviewed and authorized by the Activity Center Head or School Principal.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains prescribed schedules and records the pick-up and delivery as required;
  • Picks up and signs for equipment or material and delivers such articles to warehouses, school, activity centers and other locations;
  • Checks automotive equipment to determine that gasoline and oil supplies are adequate, tires are properly inflated, necessary repair tools are available and lights and safety devices are in proper operating condition;
  • Cleans and performs routine maintenance of the interior and exterior of warehouse vehicles;
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment on the road including tire and tube repairs;
  • Maintains trip records of time and place of pick-up of materials and supplies;
  • Assists with loading and unloading supplies, crates and other material transported and moves said material to or from the vehicle;
  • Assist with unpacking and uncrating supplies and other freight at the warehouse, schools, activity centers and other locations;
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma (12th grade) Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited institution AND;
  • Two (2) years' experience in operating automotive equipment heavier than passenger cars AND;
  • Clean traffic and police record with no accidents three years prior to application AND;
  • Employee must possess a valid Virgin Island Driver's License.

Position Factors:

 

FACTOR I:  SUPERVISORY CONTROLS 

  • Requires no supervision of employees or supervisory functions;
  • Employee works under the supervision of a higher-level officer who assigns duties, describe scope of goals and daily objectives;
  • Work is controlled by routine review and reporting to or consultation with supervisors;
  • Work is reviewed through on-site visits, reports and achievement of objectives;
  • Instruction is provided in new situations, methods and procedures that are not clearly related to existing tasks and duties.

FACTOR II:  GUIDELINES

  • USVI Traffic Safety Laws, Federal Traffic Laws, and Departmental guidelines and procedures must be followed;
  • Employee is expected to use knowledge acquired through specific instructions and experience in making sound independent decisions.

FACTOR III:  COMPLEXITY

  • Requires a combination of job functions using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly prescribed instructions, standard practices and procedures;

FACTOR IV:  SCOPE AND EFFECT

  • The purpose of this work is to perform unskilled warehouse delivery and transportation tasks;
  • Requires responsibility for contributing to agency objectives by supporting or performing routine work activities within a small organizational unit.
  • Errors at this level may have cumbersome consequences and are readily detected through frequent checking or inspection.    

FACTOR V:  PERSONAL CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

  • Requires personal contact with fellow employees, supervisors, administrators, work unit and in some cases students;
  • The purpose is to obtain, clarify, or give facts or information to aid in the production of accomplishing assigned tasks.

 
FACTOR VI: PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must have normal vision, good color perception, and hearing;
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time with intermittent walking.
  • May also require medium to heavy work, including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or climbing;
  • The ability to handle cumbersome awkwardly shaped boxes;
  • The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects;
  • The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing;
  • The ability to use short bursts of muscle force to propel oneself (as in jumping or sprinting), or to throw an object;
  • The ability to quickly move your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects;
  • The employee may be required to assist in lifting and/or moving up to 70 pounds.

FACTOR VII: WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Requires performing regular job functions in an adverse working environment involving a combination of disagreeable elements which significantly impacts the employee's capacity for completing work assignments.
  • Some goods may require special condition handling and storage, which may affect the working environment.
  • Some of the loading and unloading can be outdoors in all weathers.
  • Workers normally wear protective clothing like safety shoes;
  • Workers are required to adhere to standard safety regulations to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
